# topic_prune_characters - AI settings

> Sets the character budget for a topic's AI field context before Omni prunes it to fit.

Sets the number of characters of field metadata (names, descriptions, sample values, synonyms, SQL) a topic may send the Omni Agent before Omni prunes field details to fit.

A topic's own [`ai_prune_characters`](https://docs.omni.co/modeling/topics/parameters/ai-prune-characters) overrides this setting for that topic.

## Syntax

```yaml theme={null}
ai_settings:
  topic_prune_characters: <integer>
```

## Properties

**ai\_settings** `object`

An object that contains various AI settings. See [`ai_settings`](https://docs.omni.co/modeling/models/parameters/ai-settings) for more information.

**ai\_settings properties**

**topic\_prune\_characters** `integer` (default: 75000)

The character budget for a topic's AI field context. Must be between 10,000 and 200,000 (roughly 19,000 tokens at the default of 75,000). A value outside this range is a validator error.

## Behavior

Setting `topic_prune_characters` turns on a validator warning for every AI-visible topic that Omni estimates will exceed the budget. Without this setting, the warning only checks topics named in [`ai_chat_topics`](https://docs.omni.co/modeling/models/ai-chat-topics). For the warning's details and autofix, see the [`ai_prune_characters` behavior section](https://docs.omni.co/modeling/topics/parameters/ai-prune-characters#behavior).

## Examples

```yaml title="Raise the character budget for AI field context" theme={null}
ai_settings:
  topic_prune_characters: 100000
```
