# null_display - Measures

> Sets the text a table chart shows for null values of a measure.

Sets the text a [table visualization][table-vis] shows in place of the default null symbol (`∅`) for this measure's null values.

## Syntax

```yaml theme={null}
<measure_name>:
  null_display: "<text>"
```

## Properties

**measure\_name** `object`

The name of the measure.

**measure\_name properties**

**null\_display** `string`

The text to display for null values of this measure in table chart cells.

## Behavior

A table chart resolves a cell's null text in this order:

1. The column's [**Null display** setting](/visualize-present/visualizations/types/table#field-options)
2. The measure's `null_display` value.
3. The table's [**Null display** setting](/visualize-present/visualizations/types/table#table-options).
4. The default `∅` symbol.

To show a blank cell for a measure with `null_display` set, set the [column's **Null display** setting](/visualize-present/visualizations/types/table#field-options), or set `null_display` to an empty string (`""`).

An empty string is a valid value for `null_display` and displays as a blank cell. This is different from leaving `null_display` unset, in which case the table's setting is used instead.

> [!NOTE]
>
> `null_display` only affects table chart cells and subtotal rows. The Results table, pivot headers, the formula bar, and downloads always show `∅` for null values.

## Examples

### Descriptive null text

```yaml title="orders.view" theme={null}
measures:
  discount:
    sql: '"discount"'
    aggregate_type: sum
    null_display: "No discount"
```

### Explicit blank value

```yaml title="orders.view" theme={null}
measures:
  margin:
    sql: '"margin"'
    aggregate_type: sum
    null_display: ""
```
