# is_empty - Filter operators

> Filters for empty string values.

Filters for empty string values. This operator applies to string fields only.

> [!TIP]
>
> Set `is_empty: false` to match non-empty values instead. This has the same effect as `not_is_empty: true`.

## Syntax

```yaml theme={null}
<field_name>:
  is_empty: <boolean>
```

```yaml theme={null}
<field_name>:
  not_is_empty: <boolean>
```

## Properties

**field\_name** `string` *required*

The field to filter on, specified in the format `view_name.field_name`. Must be a string field.

**is\_empty** `boolean` *required*

Set to `true` to match empty values, or `false` to match non-empty values.

**not\_is\_empty** `boolean` *required*

Set to `true` to match non-empty values, or `false` to match empty values. This is the negated form of `is_empty`.

## Legacy syntax

Existing YAML that uses `is: ""` to represent an is-empty filter still reads as `is_empty: true`. New filters are always written as `is_empty` or `not_is_empty`.

Outside of an [`or`](/modeling/filters/operators/or) or [`and`](/modeling/filters/operators/and) group, `is: ""` means "any value" and does not filter the field. Use `is_empty` to filter on empty values unambiguously.

## Examples

```yaml title="Match users with an empty name" theme={null}
users.name:
  is_empty: true
```

```yaml title="Match users with a non-empty email" theme={null}
users.email:
  not_is_empty: true
```
