# Swap dashboard identifiers

<GuideTitle title="Swap dashboard identifiers" />

A document's URL includes its *identifier*, and that's the part people actually save when they bookmark a dashboard or app. This guide uses *document* to mean either one. If you build a replacement and publish it at a new URL, the old bookmark doesn't follow along. It keeps pointing at the original. Since you can't reach into everyone's browser to update a saved bookmark, the fix is to move the identifier itself from the old document to the new one.

Identifiers must be unique across your organization, so this has to happen in two steps: free it up on the old document, then claim it on the new one.

## Requirements

* A **Manager** or higher content role on both documents, which is required to access [document settings](/share#controlling-document-interactivity)
* The old document you're replacing, and the new one that should take its place

## Steps

<Steps>
  <Step title="Free up the old identifier">
    Open the document you're replacing and change its identifier to something else. The exact value doesn't matter, as long as it's unique, so appending `-old` or `-archived` works fine.

    You can get to the **Identifier** field two ways:

    * **File > Document settings**
    * The **Share** modal's **Settings** tab

    Update the **Identifier** field and save. This frees up the original value so it's available for the new document to use.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Assign the freed identifier to the new document">
    Open the document that should replace the old one, and set its **Identifier** field to the value you just freed up: the same one from the original bookmarked URL.

    Save your changes.
  </Step>
</Steps>

Identifier changes take effect immediately. The next time someone opens the bookmarked link, it will load the new document instead of the old one.
